InnovateTechie is an independent publication about affordable smart home technology. We exist to answer one question well: what can you actually buy and set up without a hub, without rewiring, and without a monthly subscription?
Who runs this site
InnovateTechie is written and edited by Hamza Javaid, a software engineer working professionally since 2022, based in Pakistan. Editorial decisions sit with him. No outside party has approval rights over what is recommended here.
He started the site because smart home advice is dominated by two things that do not help a budget buyer: roundups of expensive flagship devices, and specifications copied from a manufacturer without checking what they mean in a small rented flat.
What we cover
- Budget setups that start with a single smart plug rather than a whole ecosystem.
- Renters and small spaces, where nothing can be drilled, wired or left behind.
- No-subscription security, including the real three-year cost of a camera once any plan is counted.
- Energy saving, separating devices with documented savings from devices bought for convenience.
- Smart home for older adults, favouring voice control and automatic lighting over apps.
- Troubleshooting, because most smart home frustration is a Wi-Fi band or a pairing mode, not a faulty device.
How we decide what to recommend
We are specific about the limits of what we can claim, because that is what makes the rest of the advice worth reading.
- We do not claim hands-on testing we have not done. Where a guide compares devices on specifications and documented behaviour rather than our own testing, it says so on the page.
- Facts are checked against the primary source: the manufacturer’s own product and support pages, or a standards body such as the Connectivity Standards Alliance for Matter.
- Savings claims are attributed to the body that published them, such as ENERGY STAR, rather than presented as our own measurements.
- Prices are described as ranges or left to you to check, because smart home prices change constantly.
- Safety limits are stated plainly. Smart home devices are not medical devices, and our guides for older adults say so wherever it matters.
How we make money
InnovateTechie earns through affiliate links and display advertising. If you buy through a link here, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Affiliate relationships are disclosed on the pages where they apply.
Placement in a guide is never sold, and we do not publish sponsored posts presented as editorial.
Corrections
Smart home products change: a plan starts charging for a feature that used to be free, a device drops support for an assistant, a price moves. If you find something wrong, tell us what and where. Confirmed errors are fixed and the change is noted rather than quietly edited. Our editorial policy sets out how that works.
